When Alex and I knew we wanted to create our own business, we decided this was an opportunity to make the product we always wanted. With two college degrees and zero manufacturing experience, we spent the next 7 months researching products and reaching out to manufacturers all over the world. After a lot of back and forth communication, while forcing our friends to be our guinea pigs, we finally got the product we were looking for.

You’ll never find a marketer who thinks their product is crap. At least not publicly. There are a lot of gel pomades out there – so why should you trust us with your hair? It’s a fair question. Simple answer – we’re fanatical about our products. As we continue to grow, we’re always focused on improving the experience based on what you [our customers] want, whether that be the scent or the size of the jar.

Being a barber in college, I was always very particular about the hair products I used. I tried countless products but couldn’t find a pomade that could hold my thick and wavy Mexican hair. I wanted something that was easy to wash out and didn’t cause me to breakout, ruining my chances with the girls. Nothing worked so I decided to take what I learned in Chemistry class and got to work mixing a ton of various products in my bathroom.

Long story short, it wasn’t the right pomade – we got tons of feedback both constructive and ruthless but discovered a lot of learnings that ultimately improved the product into what you see today. We learned to set the right expectation with our customers – carefully choosing the words we use to describe the impact that our product will have. We also developed our “F-YA” scale, ensuring we hold ourselves to the highest standards in the industry.
